TEN – THOROUGH

“Margot,” she said.

Obviously, it was her way of introducing herself, calling out her name as if he saw her. But that wasn’t the case, Darren was engrossed in his project in Maintenance room A.

“That’s my name,” she said.

Darren put down the object on the workbench.

“You’re Darren, right?”

“What are you doing in here?” he asked.

“I came to find you. You might be here and he even showed me on the little map that …”

“My son had no right,” Darren said. “This is my little room. My project room.”

“I’m ... I’m really sorry, I truly am,” she said. “I really wanted to meet you, and I thought you’d be at dinner. I’ll just let you be.” Margot turned to walk out.

“Why?” Darren asked. “Why did you want to meet me?”

She turned around. “I have this ... nasty ingrown toenail.”

Silence.

Darren smiled. “That was good.”

“I was scared it was bad timing.”

“A good joke can never have bad timing.”

“You don’t think?” she asked. “I can think of a few times.”

“Yeah, I guess you’re right.”

“I wanted to thank you for letting us in,” Margot said.

“We have plenty of room. I apologize. I’m not usually this much of a dick. Actually, I’m not a mean person at all.”

“So, I’ve heard,” she said. “Everyone talked about you before I got here. Jerad, Dina, General Kelli. Apparently, you are a natural guru at fighting these things. That you are some sort of badass with a spear gun.”

Darren shook his head with a smile. “Wouldn’t say a badass, just someone who protects their family. A lot …” he tossed out his hand. “A lot of good it did my wife.”

“I know that feeling.”

Darren glanced at her.

“I stayed behind as an essential worker. Front lines, you know, my family went to safety,” she said. “I thought me staying behind would be best for them, none of them made it. As a vet EMT, I have seen a lot. What happened to my husband, my kids … it was the most horrific thing I ever witnessed in my life.”

“Ditto.”

“It stays with us. And,” Margot said. “I just wanted to meet you. Let you know I am here to help. I’m pretty good on the medical front, if you need me. You know since you have those people coming.”

“And that’s my problem,” Darren said. “I’m glad they’re coming. My whole purpose here is to build a human army, a fighting force against these things. We can beat them.”

“Yes, we can.”

“But … my friend was taken, and I want to be part of the rescue team.”

“Well, from what I hear about you it doesn’t surprise me.”

“How do you know so much about me?” Darren asked.

“You didn’t come to dinner; you were the topic of conversation.”

“Oh, boy.”

“Do you have a plan?” she asked.

“Yeah, I have a good one. But I can’t implement it alone. Those things … the powerful ones.”

“The Imperials,” she said.

“Yes, they need the blood of the mare. If we can find a way to thwart that, find a way to the Imperials before they revive, we can beat them.
